What is Prostate Artery Embolization ?

Prostate artery embolization is a minimally invasive procedure to treat the urinary symptoms caused by Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

BPH is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland that compresses the urethra and thus causing urinary symptoms. This is the most common non cancerous ( benign ) growth seen in men.

Urinary symptoms caused by prostate enlargement are seen in 1 out of 4 men over the age of 55 and half of all men aged over 75 years. Treatment is necessary if the symptoms affect quality of life.

How is the procedure like?

Prostate Artery Embolization literally means selectively blocking blood supply to the overgrown prostate and thus helping in reducing its size and associated symptoms.

This procedure is performed by a trained Vascular Interventional Radiologist in a Cathlab. A small IV line is placed in the groin artery and a catheter is navigated to reach the prostatic artery.The Prostate is then blocked by injecting 500 micron size PVA particles.

This procedure does not require any incision / placement of scopes in the urethra. There is no bleeding or injury expected during or because of the procedure.

Who should consider PAE ?

As the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urethra and thus causes symptoms like :

  • Urinary Incontinence – may range from some leaking of urine to complete loss of bladder control.
  • Irritation during voiding urine.
  • Increased frequency, urgency and pain during voiding.

These symptoms make life difficult for the elderly gentleman and can be very distressing.

How do I know if Prostatic Artery Embolization is for me ?

PAE can be considered by those patients who are ineligible for traditional methods like TURP ( Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate ) for various medical reasons like :

  • Being on blood thinners – increasing risk of bleeding from invasive procedures.
  • Other concurrent conditions like heart disease etc, that can potentially complicate invasive procedures.
  • Patient preference – not preferring to undergo the traditional surgery if you are too apprehensive to undergo a TURP.

What tests are you expected to undergo to plan for a PAE procedure ?

  • Urine Routine and Culture test to look for a Urinary Infection
  • CT Angiogram of the Pelvis to study the blood supply to the Prostate
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test
  • Routine pre-procedure fitness tests
